If Robin Williams can go from hammy, popular comic actor and cartoon voice to creepy guy, why not Jack Black? Why not indeed, says Jack Black's agent and Richard Linklater. According to THR, Black will make his give-me-an-Oscar-maybe? transition with Bernie, teaming with his School of Rock director to play a guy who kills Shirley MacLaine yet pretends she's alive:
"Bernie" is set in the small town of Carthage, Texas and follows a Renaissance man-community leader-mortician Bernie (Black) who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a wealthy but very particular widow (MacLaine). When he kills her, he goes to great lengths to maintain the illusion that she is still alive.
While Bernie's pretend-this-person-isn't-dead plot sounds suspiciously like a certain other "Bernie" film, Linklater claims this will be something darker, more along the lines of Fargo than Jonathan Silverman and Andrew McCarthy's comic weekend. That's probably what the director of Weekend at Bernie's II said, too.
