Never Mind About Ben Affleck in 'Great Gatsby'

April 20, 2011

Director Baz Luhrmann's plan to put Ben Affleck in The Great Gatsby 3-D, finally delivering to us the three-dimensional Ben Affleck Armageddon so clearly deserved, just isn't going to work out. See, Affleck has been enjoying how much more respect he gets for being a serious director instead of the lead in Paycheck, and he's committed to directing Argo, a script about the 1979 Iran hostage crisis. That film will put him in the Middle East at just the time Luhrmann would have wanted him on set in a porkpie hat, so he won't be available to find some way to shoehorn in a reference to the Red Sox into East Egg.

The search is already on for a new Tom Buchanan and, without his first choice available, Luhrmann is reportedly now maybe looking for someone Australian to fill this part and others "because it helps the film's financial situation." So definitely not Ethan Hawke then?
