'Taken' Director Will Now Make Sean Penn an Old Action Guy

January 29, 2013

Having built a reputation on his ability to take an aging, self-serious actor and press him into a one-dimensional killing machine, Taken director Pierre Morel has been hired to attempt another such transformation on Sean Penn.

According to THR, Morel is in talks to helm Prone Gunman, a film from Silver Pictures and Studio Canal that Penn has long been attached to as his gateway to becoming an Action Dad.

As this is Penn's first try at murdering guys and calling in threats, the film takes it easy on him with a simple, well-worn tale of spy betrayal. Based on a novel by Jean-Patrick Manchette, it centers on an international operative (Penn) whose own organization double-crosses him, sending him on "a relentless game of cat-and-mouse across Europe," which Morel should probably be able to handle. Shooting is expected to begin in the spring, so we can hopefully soon move on to Sean Penn fighting some wild animals next. About time we see what the two-time Oscar-winner does when faced with a pack of mean-spirited badgers.
