Just last month, Kevin Smith announced that his Clerks trilogy-closer would likely now be an online book series, allowing him to "go inside the characters' heads, tell Year One origin stories where the first chapter is Dante and Randall meeting in kindergarten ... [which] I want to do, because I'm a stoner." But stoned inspiration takes many forms, and sometimes, just as a stoner begins a rambling, overly-detailed narrative, someone interrupts to send them on a different tangent. And last night, that happened to Kevin Smith, the high friend on the couch that is his biological clock shaking him awake to say, "Dude, it's 4:20! We should totally write a screenplay!"
So, they did that, Smith later explaining on his Facebook:
THE BEGINNING OF THE END 20 years ago today, we started shooting CLERKS. 20 years later, with no plan or provocation, I jumped out of bed at 4:20 this morning and started writing CLERKS III. It's been like hanging out with old friends. And after 2 hours of tapping the keys and giggling, I have come to a conclusion... CLERKS III will be the best film I'll ever make.
Notably, it will also supposedly be the last film he ever makes. But as for if either of those things will come to pass, only time will tell. And speaking of time: Woooo! 4:20! (Marijuana.)
