Sorry, Gus Van Sant, Joe Wright Is Frontrunner To Direct '50 Shades of Grey'
Having earned acclaim for Atonement, Pride & Prejudice, and Anna Karenina, director Joe Wright may next bring his finesse for costumed romance to a girl getting fucked in a ball-gag. He's reportedly become the frontrunner to direct Fifty Shades of Grey, Focus and Universal's adaptation of E.L. James novel about a young interviewer getting too close to her subject--assuming one considers a contractual BDSM relationship "too close."
THR's sources caution, however, that no offer has yet gone out, and directors like Moneyball's Bennett Miller, Monster's Patty Jenkins, and Gus Van Sant, whose independently-made fan video was apparently still not enough to secure him the job. Unfortunately for Van Sant, producers continue to imagine the film being more like Wright's The Soloist, but with ankle restraints and screwing instead of cellos and paranoid schizophrenia.
