Will Smith Too Pricey To Punch Any More Freedom-Hating Aliens

When the aliens return, who give our planet its sassiest hope, and give Jeff Goldblum a ride to the alien mothership? Because it apparently won't be Will Smith. Speaking recently to NYDailyNews, Independence Day director Roland Emmerich explained that Smith has priced himself out of the franchise, potentially leaving it to Judd Hirch to welcome all the aliens to Earth.

"We have like maybe half of the people that you know would know from the first film (in the script) and the other half people who are new," Emmerich said. "Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name. It would be too much." And indeed, Roland Emmerich would never want to go "too much" with an Independence Day sequel.
