John Stewart Hosting Oscars

September 12, 2007

The New York Times is reporting this morning that Daily Show lead John Stewart will be hosting the next Academy Awards ceremony. The article notes that the move is somewhat unexpected, as Stewart's 2006 turn as host drew fewer viewers (38.9 million) than in other recent years, particularly when compared to 1998, when Billy Crystal had 55 million tuned in, since most Academy Awards viewers would prefer a host as old and out-of-touch as the Academy itself. Since Stewart no longer has Brokeback Mountain to turn to for gay cowboy jokes, expect references to how funny newer movies would be if they also featured gay cowboys.
