Tom and Jerry Movie on the Way!

January 23, 2009

Tom and Jerry just aren't real enough, you know? It's always been an issue for me that the cartoon, which contains so much inane, comic violence that it's basically the definition of a cartoon, is limited to the world of cel animation. Like Alvin and the Chipmunks, Underdog, Garfield, and Scooby Doo, why aren't these characters for some reason in the real world, where they can be particularly grating? Answer: because Warner Bros. just now thought of making a disgusting live-action/CGI hybrid of Tom and Jerry. From Variety:

Warner Bros. is turning to Tom and Jerry to create its own "Alvin and the Chipmunks"-like family franchise.

Plans are to bring the constantly warring cat and mouse to life as CG characters that run around in live-action settings.

Studio-based Dan Lin, currently producing the upcoming "Sherlock Holmes" and exec producer on "Terminator: Salvation," will adapt the classic Hanna-Barbera property as an origin story that reveals how Tom and Jerry first meet and form their rivalry before getting lost in Chicago and reluctantly working together during an arduous journey home.

Oh, good, an origin story. Besides not being real enough, my other beef with Tom and Jerry was that I couldn't figure out their literal and figurative cat and mouse relationship. Why would these two species known as born enemies always be antagonizing each other? It makes no sense without context.

How about the two of them are roommates, and they're fighting over the same girl, a genetic freak hybrid of cat and mouse. That immediately sets the tone that this will be even more revolting and bizarrely sexual than Alvin and the Chipmunks.
