'Gravity' Hoping for a Portman

September 7, 2010

With Angelina Jolie having rejected multiple pleas to star in Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity, Warner Bros. has reportedly offered Natalie Portman the chance to play the lead in the sci-fi drama. Robert Downey Jr. is already signed to co-star, though the film is said to rest almost entirely on the shoulders of the lead, a woman stranded alone on a space station. The offer comes in the wake of Portman's starring role in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan, which has earned her praise and early Oscar buzz from those who caught the film at Telluride and weren't just obsessed with the whole girl-kissing part. The actress is expected to make her decision after reading the script this week, so if she turns it down, it's probably because the screenplay isn't up to the rigid standards she established with Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium and Star Wars I-III.
