Johnny Depp No Longer Our Pancho (But Other Good Actors Might Be)

February 22, 2011

Bad news, my Villistas: Johnny Depp won't be playing Pancho Villa anymore. Over a year ago, Depp was in talks to play the lead in director Emir Kusturica's awkwardly-titled biopic, Seven Friends of Pancho Villa and the Woman With Six Fingers, but he's now reportedly been forced to drop the part due to other, better-paying commitments to play Draculas, Thin Men", Native American sidekicks, etc.

The good news, though, is that the part will now apparently be passed on to Gael García Bernal or Benicio del Toro, both of whom already have experience playing Spanish-speaking revolutionaries thanks to their respective Che films. Kusturica is expected to make a final decision shortly after he meets with both actors in Cuba, where he will see who looks more like Antonio Banderas when wearing a Mario Bros. mustache.
