Another 'Little Mermaid' Film Added to Endless Fairy Tale Lineup

May 23, 2011

Well, we can now add another Little Mermaid to our abundance of stockpiled Snow Whites, Wizards of Oz, Peter Pans, Hansels and Gretels. While Working Title and Hanna director Joe Wright have had a dark, live-action adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen planned for going on a year now, Sony doesn't see that as a legitimate reason for not doing their own "dark" half-fish story, and have bought the rights to Carolyn Turgeon's book Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale. The outrightly-promoted twist? Now it's a human-human-mermaid love triangle, I guess:

The story gets its point of view shifted and the tone is definitely not Disney. It centers on a princess who, in order to save her ravaged kingdom, sets out on a dangerous journey to marry the prince of her rival kingdom, not knowing that a beautiful mermaid has fallen for the same man and has sacrificed everything to be with him.

Yikes, princess, how do you compete with a mermaid? Besides plainly pointing out that you have a human vagina, instead of the gross lower body of a fish. We'll see!

Country Strong writer/director Shana Feste is adapting for herself to direct, so consider yourself just a licensing fee away from Gwyneth Paltrow belting out a countrified "Part of Your World."
