'Restless' Trailer: Gus Van Sant Made You a Quirky Romance

July 8, 2011

With a story involving a confused, death-obsessed, young protagonist who converses with a WWII-era Japanese ghost only he can see, and a romance with a beautiful but eccentric hospitalized girl, Restless has all the familiar trappings of a standard issue quirky debut from a director wearing his Harold and Maude influences on his corduroy sleeve. You know what's weird about this one, though? Well, yes, it is a little weird that Mia Wasikowska plays the love interest instead of newly-crowned everyconfusedyoungwhiteguyloveinterest Emma Roberts; but what's weirder than that is that it's directed by a 58-year-old man with a well-established 30-year film career, not by a 27-year-old recent film school graduate with a Rushmore poster in his bathroom. Turns out, Gus Van Sant made this goddammer:

Well, at least it isn't another shot-for-shot Psycho remake.
