Ape Movie Continues Dominance Over Non-Ape Movies

August 15, 2011

Your weekend box office:

1. Rise of the Planet of the Apes - $27.5 million. Charging admission to the ultimate contest between ape and man seems to hold up at a national level just as well as it does when staged in a backyard, fought by various recently-discharged circus performers.

2. The Help - $25.5 million. Never doubt the box office power of Mom's book group.

3. Final Destination 5 - $18.4 million. Just think: before the Final Destination series, traveling carnivals were our most likely means of seeing unexpectedly gruesome deaths.

4. The Smurfs - $13.5 million. That's over $240 million worldwide now, you monsters.

5. 30 Minutes or Less - $13 million, settling for the 5th spot's "at least this is better than that Glee movie's 11th place opening" prize.
