Either 'Smurfs' or 'Cowboys & Aliens' Did Best This Weekend

August 1, 2011

Your weekend box office:

1./2. Cowboys & Aliens / Smurfs - It's still too close to call this weekend, with both Cowboys & Aliens and Smurfs pulling in an estimated $36.2 million apiece. Estimates can, at times, be way off, though. For instance, I estimated no humans would want to see a Smurfs movie, but it turns out humans may have wanted to see a Smurfs movie more than any other movie.

3. Captain America: The First Avenger - $24.9 million, down almost 62% as the Belgians succeed in being the more popular blue assholes who end up confused in Times Square somehow.

4. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 - $21.9 million over the weekend, bringing the worldwide gross up to over a billion--the first Harry Potter film to cross that mark. You've finally made it to the big leagues, Glasses Wizard.

5. Crazy, Stupid, Love - $19.3 million, with most ticket sales coming from 30-something guys who wanted to make sure their claim they would "totally do" Julianne Moore and/or Marisa Tomei still held up with age.
