Hurricane Has Little Effect on Inexplicable Enthusiasm for 'The Help'

August 29, 2011

Your weekend box office:

1. The Help - $14.3 million, still holding on to the lead in its third week of release, and boy is Emma Stone ever looking smug about that.

2. Colombiana - $10.3 million. Sorry, Zoe Saldana, you aren't yet ready to level up to Female Jason Statham.

3. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark - $8.7 million. There's a reason this failed while the Nickelodeon series Are You Afraid of the Dark? is looked back on with fondness: no one wants to be told whether or not to be afraid of the dark. That's something we all need to figure out for ourselves, perhaps through a story involving a ghost clown haunting a funhouse.

4. Rise of the Planet of the Apes - $8.65 million--and that's no monkey business! Typing that gave me a nosebleed.

5. Our Idiot Brother - $6.6 million, which is actually enough to turn a profit on the film's $5 million budget. No tears, Paul Rudd. No tears.
