Rising Ape Planet Our Most Popular Movie Option

August 8, 2011

Your weekend box office:

1. Rise of the Planet of the Apes - $54 million. Doesn't surprise me much. Man has loved watching the antics of the lower primates ever since we discovered they would dance when played an organ grinder.

2. The Smurfs - $21 million. After a a close battle against Cowboys & Aliens last week, this week The Smurfs left no mistakes about its dominance as the film of choice for quietly staring past the screen, wondering what choices or lack thereof one has made to bring oneself to this point.

3. Cowboys & Aliens - $15.7 million, clearly not feeling the boost from that Ferguson Darling plug.

4. The Change-Up - $13.5 million. And yet despite this relative failure, one can't help but feel that we're still just a "rich man rushing past a homeless man wishing he'd 'get a job'" away from our next inexplicable body swap teaching all involved a valuable lesson.

5. Captain America: The First Avenger - $13 million, keeping the film nearly neck-and-neck with where Thor was at in the same period. The desire to see muscular blonde dude throw archaic weaponry has not waned, apparently.
