'Akira' May Include Actual Japanese Person

November 23, 2011

Unable to reach an agreement in talks for Gary Oldman to play Colonel Shikishima, the filmmakers behind Warner's live-action Akira remake have reportedly resorted to asking actual Japanese people to join the film. TwitchFilm has word that, in lieu of Oldman and in direct opposition to the film's implicit goal of racial purity, Inception star and apparent horse whisperer Ken Watanabe has been offered the Colonel role. Whitewashing politics aside, Watanabe would make a strong addition to the cast, and has just the kind of authoritative presence needed to play the militant character. Plus, his ability to speak Japanese means he'll nail the pronunciation when he's forced to call Helena Bonham Carter "Lady Miyako."
