Neil Patrick Harris, Spire Robbery Among New Releases

November 4, 2011

Your new releases:

A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas
Director: Todd Strauss-Schulson
Starring: Kal Penn, John Cho, Neil Patrick Harris
Good if you want to see: the Harold & Kumar trilogy end the only way it could: ridiculously, and in 3D.

Tower Heist
Director: Brett Ratner
Starring: Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Casey Affleck, Matthew Broderick
Good if you want to see: the results of a team of professionals fulfilling their due obligation of making a film that matches the name "Tower Heist."

The Son of No One
Director: Dito Montiel
Starring: Channing Tatum, Al Pacino, Katie Holmes, Tracy Morgan
Good if you want to see: G.I. Joe facing the belated consequences of being at the center of a murder cover-up when he was young. More notably, you've got Katie Holmes and Al Pacino in a movie with a former SNL star, and miraculously this is not a movie about Adam Sandler also being an ugly sister Adam Sandler.

And in limited releases...

Five Star Day (limited)
Director: Dany Buday
Starring: Cam Gigandet, Jena Malone, Brooklyn Sudano, Max Hartman
Good if you want to see: a young man trying to disprove astrology by finding others that share his time of birth and comparing days and fortunes with them. We can only pray someone will one day use similar scientific methods to prove or disprove fortune cookies.

Killing Bono (limited)
Director: Nick Hamm
Starring: Ben Barnes, Robert Sheehan, Krysten Ritter, Peter Serafinowicz
Good if you want to see: a small Irish band in the '80s trying to make it big in the shadow of a rising U2. Which is hard, because no one want to be unfavorably compared to a guy who always wears sunglasses inside.

The Look (limited)
Director: Angelina Maccarone
Starring: Charlotte Rampling
Good if you want to see: an intimate portrait of famed actress Charlotte Rampling. I wonder how much time they'll spend on her part in Basic Instinct 2...

Young Goethe in Love (limited)
Director: Philipp Stölzl
Starring: Alexander Fehling, Miriam Stein, Moritz Bleibtreu
Good if you want to see: Shakespeare in Love--now with [young] Johann Goethe!

The Last Rites of Joe May (limited)
Director: Joe Maggio
Starring: Dennis Farina, Jamie Ane Allman, Meredith Droeger
Good if you want to see: character actor Dennis Farina give a down-on-his-luck tough guy lead performance that will remind you Dennis Farina is still good for more than just picking up his Law & Order residuals checks.
