Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Reynolds Co-Starring with Those Creepy-as-Shit Big Eye Paintings

January 23, 2012

Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Reynolds are attached to star as the leads in Big Eyes, an indie biopic about Margaret and Walter Keane, the couple whose "big eye" paintings became ubiquitous in the '60s and even today continue to haunt innumerable elderly hallways, making just going to the bathroom at Grandma's a fairly nerve-wracking ordeal.

Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski are writing and directing the film under the producing banner of Tim Burton, with whom the duo previously worked on the script for Ed Wood. Alexander and Karaszewski also wrote The People Vs. Larry Flynt and Man on the Moon, so you can see how this project fits pretty snugly into their quirky biopic wheelhouse.

The Keanes' story is already a pretty interesting one without the aid of the dramatizations of Legally Blonde and Green Lantern. Though Margaret was the painter, Walter for years took dubious credit for the works, himself wanting to be able to brag to all his buddies about how fuckin' huge he made the eyes in his latest bad-ass big eye painting. Eventually this discrepancy is said to have led to their divorce, and with both seeking rights to the works, led to a court case on the matter. At the hearing, Margaret painted up some huge eyes right their in the courtroom--Walter said he totally could too, except, you know, his bad shoulder and all--and the judge sided with her. Her website now continues to sell her paintings, and notes she is "still painting with tears, [though] they are most often tears of joy and not sadness." Well, just so long as there are some tears in there, y'know?

Anyway, this could be one to watch, if not for the talent involved then to ponder the shocking fact that the first team-up of Reynolds and Witherspoon is somehow not a romantic-comedy concerned with an antagonist but ultimately loving relationship formed between rival volleyball coaches (probably titled... Net Foul?). Are these producers trying to piss off your older sister?
