Ernest Series Reboot To Have Ernest's Son Go to Places Now

October 16, 2012

Ernest P. Worrell portrayer Jim Varney has been dead for over a decade, but the question of whether or not you know what he means continues to echo in the ears of another generation, and the time has come for the Worrell progeny to assume his father's denim mantle.

And so he will in Son of Ernest, a new Ernest comedy Ruckusfilm is launching with the participation of Ernest creator and series director John Cherry. As the title makes painfully explicit, the idea is to continue the tradition of mugging for the camera and occasionally getting incarcerated by centering on Ernest's offspring in a film that writer Dan Ewen boldly claims will not suck, saying, "We plan to honor the originals and Jim Varney while birthing a new chapter that lies somewhere between not sucking and Earth-shatteringly funny." The obvious question of casting a replacement Varney has yet to be addressed, as has the question of whether Vern Jr.'s unspeaking POV will be in 3D.
