Sacha Baron Cohen has reportedly departed that Queen film we'd been basing entirely around his sort of looking like Freddie Mercury. And it seems it's that very lack of vision beyond "get him back in the Borat mustache" that's caused the film to now fall apart, with Deadline reporting that it's creative differences between Cohen and the widow Queen at fault. Apparently Cohen wanted a "gritty R-rated tell-all," and had approached David Fincher and his Les Misérables director Tom Hooper to develop that. The surviving members of Queen, meanwhile, have refused to approve those directors. They're said to be looking for "more of a PG movie," where Bicycle Race is visualized with the band playfully cycling in delight, not with a brutal race against the ravages of AIDS.
It's yet unclear what Cohen's exit means for the project. Perhaps the group can find a new actor more in line with their dream of inoffensive, conservatively-covered fat bottoms.
