Joaquin Phoenix Falls for Siri Johansson in Spike Jonze's 'Her' Trailer

August 7, 2013

A bookish Joaquin Phoenix is joined by Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Olivia Wilde, and the voice of Scarlett Johansson in Her, Spike Jonze's 2001: A Sad Sack Odyssey. The film takes place in an alternate reality wherein the iPhone's Siri concept is actually effective, not just a slightly more efficient way to perform a misspelled internet search. In Her, female-voiced operating systems have reached a point where you can actually have a convincing conversation with them--and if you're lonely enough after a divorce, you might even start to develop some pathetic feelings for them, apparently. So it goes with Phoenix, whose fragile state pushes him to fall for the smoky, disembodied voice, even when Amy Adams is right there looking as approachable and unconditioned as Cameron Diaz in Being John Malkovich. A true romance for this information age, when a digital Scarlett Johansson is an all-too-relatable substitute for real human contact.

Wait, so it doesn't devolve into an action-thriller when Pseudo-Siri, feeling jealous, hacks the city infrastructure to hunt down and kill Phoenix and Adams? How refreshing.
