Michael Bay Brought Signature Crashing and Burning to the Stage

January 7, 2014

At a Samsung CES press event yesterday, Michael Bay reaffirmed the longstanding notion that he should not be trusted with dialogue when, lost without a teleprompter, he gave up and quickly shuffled off the stage.

Part of Samsung's presentation on a line of curved-screen televisions, the director was there to explain how exciting the concave TV makes images of bipedal cards, fireballs, babes, CGI shards, and so on. Unfortunately for all involved, Bay got so nervous about saying words other than "more" and "louder" that he too quickly exploded into his big thesis--"My job, as a director, is I get to dream for a living"--jumping over the Samsung exec's introduction. The executive vice president went back to pick up his line, but that further screwed up their teleprompter, leaving the two to "wing it" out there. Pretty quickly, they learned they did not have the natural riffing chemistry of Bad Boys II. So, falling back on his strengths, Bay decided to turn the presentation into a getaway scene. Here's how that went:

Bay has since explained the awkwardness, somewhat humbly posting:

Wow! I just embarrassed myself at CES - I was about to speak for Samsung for this awesome Curved 105-inch UHD TV. I rarely lend my name to any products, but this one is just stellar. I got so excited to talk, that I skipped over the Exec VP's intro line and then the teleprompter got lost. Then the prompter went up and down - then I walked off. I guess live shows aren't my thing.
