Sofia Coppola To Show Malaise of Half-Fish Girls with 'Little Mermaid'

March 18, 2014

Fulfilling the daydreams of so many a dissatisfied young fish-girl, lost in thought gazing through the reflections on her aquarium glass, Sofia Coppola will direct a new live-action take on The Little Mermaid. According to Deadline, Universal has hired on the Marie Antoinette director to take over for Anna Karenina director Joe Wright, indicating that the studio was very much looking for experience having pretty girls wear pretty dresses. Other than that, not a lot is known about the new spin on the Hans Christian Anderson tale; Edward Scissorhands writer Caroline Thompson is currently rewriting a draft that's previously gone through Fifty Shades of Grey writer Kelly Marcel and Shame's Abi Morgan. It will mark Coppola's first turn directing someone else's script, but still we can probably expect some sunlit, otherworldly dreaminess to Ariel girlishly brushing her hair with a fork.
