CGI Am What I Am: Genndy Tartakovsky's 'Popeye' Will Someday Look Like This

September 19, 2014

A CGI Popeye adaptation has been talked about for years, and was originally set for release next week before Sony pushed it back several times, leaving the forearm-heavy sailor man currently adrift somewhere in 2016. It's still not certain if they'll make that date, but the studio is at least offering one assurance: this CGI Popeye will not be as grossly-realized as some others have been.

Sony Pictures Animation and director Genndy Tartakovsky have released some test footage for the project, and it looks like pretty much all the modern Popeye fan could hope for with a slick, CGI update. The animation is goofy and fun, and there isn't a pop culture reference or scatalogical gag to be seen or farted. This is still the deformed maritime mutant and emaciated Olive Oyl you know and possibly love.
