Documentary Short 'NYC 1981' Reveals How Seriously Crummy New York Was

January 30, 2015

J.C. Chandor's A Most Violent Year opens today in wide release, and though it already has been heavily praised by critics, you may still be wondering, "So, is the title sarcastic or what? Because I don't want to go in expecting a really violent year but then it turns out it wasn't violent at all. Then I look stupid." Well, NYC, 1981 will sort that out for you. Fittingly shot in grainy 16mm and presented by Most Violent Year distributor A24, the six-minute short compiles interviews of people who actually experienced the crime wave that swept the city in the early '80s. The general sentiment? Yeah, that title is not sarcastic.
