District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp is officially making an Alien sequel--assumedly the first to focus entirely on how the class divides among the xenomorph forms mirror man's own socioeconomic inequalities.
Blomkamp confirmed the news himself on Instagram, saying, "Um... So I think it's officially my next film. #alien." The update comes almost two months after the director posted concept paintings from the film that, by his own admission, were little more than fan art--done without 20th Century Fox's support as a pitch that, he then said, he had likely abandoned.
But apparently that's not the case, because Variety now says Blomkamp has closed a deal with Fox. A deal with Sigourney Weaver--who was featured heavily in the concept art--is not yet confirmed.
Meanwhile, Ridley Scott did not take the hint from all this news. Though Fox has got this young guy in the room, and they're talking about him "[taking] the franchise to the next level," it's said that Scott is still planning to tether the franchise to its current, middling level by separately making his Prometheus sequel. Guess someone else will have to handle Exodus 2: Gods vs. Predator.
