True Detective's Emmy-winning director Cary Fukunaga opted out of doing the second season, but it turns out he's not done giving us the beautifully-shot, televised serial killing investigations we now demand of him. According to Deadline, the Jane Eyre director is reteaming with True Detective producer Anonymous Content to direct and executive produce The Alienist, a miniseries based on Caleb Carr's bestselling 1994 novel of the same name. Drive writer Hossein Amini is also executive producing and will write the series. So if you thought True Detective second season trailer was stylish and filled with intense stares, wait until you see this goddammer.

Set in 1896, The Alienist sees a psychologist, a New York Times reporter, and a police secretary team up to use the then-nascent art of psychological profiling in hunting down a serial killer that's been murdering boy sex workers. It should be good and also miserable.
