Though it failed to quite reach the opening of its series predecessor, Avengers: Age of Ultron nonetheless made a fuck of a lot of money. Over the weekend, the sequel pulled in over $187 million to secure the second-highest domestic opening ever.
That the film came in $20 million behind the first Avengers may have something to do with competition from sporting events--the Kentucky Derby, the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, a game-seven basketball match, and a beautiful day just begging for us to get out there and play a game of baseball (haha, just kidding) were all battling for our attention on Saturday. Or, it may have something to do with superhero movie fatigue, as has been perpetually worried about in film opinion pieces of the last decade. Either way, it's not something that's going to be keeping Marvel up at night: the film has already made $626 million worldwide and will easily become one of the highest-grossing films to date. Marvel can totally buy that pool they've been thinking about, and just in time for summer.
