Like last year's They Came Together, Sleeping with Other People is a rom-com with a stacked, enviable comedy lineup, featuring Jason Sudeikis, Alison Brie, Adam Scott, Jason Mantzoukas, Andrea Savage, Natasha Lyonne, Amanda Peet, and more. Unlike, They Came Together, though, when this film touches on nearly ever romantic-comedy cliché, it's unfortunately not for the sake of satire. Or at least that's how it looks by this first trailer.
Writer-director Leslye Headland pitched the film as "When Harry Met Sally for assholes," and indeed, it does seem to line up with that description. Sudeikis and Brie play cheating, sex-addicted turds that reconnect after years apart and decide to just be platonic best friends now. Sorry to spoil this and When Harry Met Sally for you, but it turns out they totally have feelings for each other. Just as predictably, there's also a goofy friend character, a friend couple with a loving but humorously contentious relationship, and an unlikable ex (Adam Brody) that we won't mind Alison Brie not ending up with. We all know she belongs with this other unlikable guy.
Still, despite feeling very hackneyed as presented in the bullet points of a trailer, early reviews have largely said that the film overcomes the triteness to succeed, much as love overcomes overwritten obstacles to bring a couple jerk-offs together. You can decide yourself when the film opens September 11.
