Julianne Moore, Ellen Page Fight for Domestic Partner Benefits in 'Freeheld' Trailer

Following up her Academy Award-winning role in Still Alice, Julianne Moore seems once again poised to weep her way to Oscar with Freeheld. Moore stars as Laurel Hester, the real-life police officer who was the subject of Cynthia Wade's Oscar-winning 2007 documentary short also titled Freeheld. The film deals with the terminally-ill Hester's fight to pass on her pension to her domestic partner, Stacie Andree (Ellen Page). Michael Shannon co-stars as Hester's ally and partner in the cop sense, and Steve Carell returns to awards-focused drama as the lawyer that takes up the case. Spoiler: after Hester's death, the New Jersey Supreme Court ended up ruling that same-sex couples have the same rights as heterosexual couples, the Civil Union Act was passed, and by 2013, Jersey legalized same-sex marriage.
