Lucy Lawless is reportedly hoping to return to the role of Xena. Xena: Warrior Princess. Not the other Xena. Speaking to Den of Geek, Lawless explained that this is not just her talking nonsense, either, like when she makes that shrill series of noises announcing her presence. She is legitimately trying to make this happen.
"I've been pitching that, actually," Lawless said of a new Xena. "The fans really do want that, and I've met some people who've crowdfunded some things, and I'm just like, 'Why don't we just do that?'"
Of course, beyond funding, there are also a couple other issues holding Xena back like so much warrior patriarchy. Namely: rights issues and the fact that apparently (2001 spoiler alert) Xena dies in the final episode of Xena: Warrior Princess. But to that second point, Lawless said, "So what? Technicality! No one really dies! Screw her head back on, it's a bit wonky, and she's got a really bad attitude since she's been in a box for 20 years, so they've got to get Xena's mojo back, and go and save the world somehow."
So if Lucy Lawless is curious why her pitch isn't working, the answer is because it's written largely in terms of Austin Powers 2 plot points.
