Weekend Box Office: NWA Narrowly Defeats God

August 31, 2015

No one cares about your DJ night, Zac Efron. And nobody cares whether or not you escaped, Owen Wilson. That's the takeaway from the box office report this weekend, which saw Wilson's No Escape open at a lukewarm-at-best $8.3 million and Efron's We Are Your Friends managed less than $2 million from over 2300 screens.

Those weak performances let Straight Outta Compton hold on to the top spot for a third weekend, narrowly stealing the prize from the second-place release. That film? War Room! Which is apparently the latest Christian-themed film to come out of nowhere and, thanks to strong church support, have a proportionately huge opening. Judging by the trailer, it seems to be about how you can use a serial killer-style note-covered wall to fix your awful marriage.

Anyway, here's your box office top five:

1. Straight Outta Compton - $13.2 million

2. War Room - $11 million

3. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation - $8.3 million

4. No Escape - $8.29 million

5. Sinister 2 - $4.7 million
