Weekend Box Office: 'Straight Outta Compton' Handily Defeats 'Straight Outta '60s Television'

August 17, 2015

At the box office over the weekend, it was good news for Are We There Yet? Begins, not so good for The Hunks from E.S.Q.U.I.R.E..

Buoyed by strong reviews and a far too many "Straight Outta" image macros filling your Facebook feed, F. Gary Gray's NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton easily topped the film charts, taking in an estimated $56 million. If the number proves accurate, it would make the movie the sixth-highest August opening ever, ahead of 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Meanwhile, in a victory for looking like a dumpy schlub, the strong-jawed, dapper looks of Guy Ritchie's The Man from U.N.C.L.E. proved fairly unappealing. The film opened weakly in third, below Mission: Impossible but still above Fantastic Four, which continued its path of unmitigated disaster with a 70% second-week dip.

Here's your box office top five:

1. Straight Outta Compton - $56.1 million

2. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation - $17 million

3. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. - $13.5 million

4. Fantastic Four - $8 million

5. The Gift - $6.5 million
