Starring a mustached, bespectacled leading man and telling a lightly sci-fi, dystopian tale of modern love, The Lobster sort of feels like if Her met if Charlie Kaufman tried to adapt Logan's Run. Which, of course, is a compliment.
The dark comedy is co-written and directed by Dogtooth's Yorgos Lanthimos, and it sees Colin Farrell playing it uncharacteristically awkward in the lead role. Farrell plays David, a single man in a world where single people are outlawed. The government now enforces a somehow even more nightmarish version of Bachelor in Paradise, forcing all the singles to go to a place called The Hotel, where they have 45 days to partner up. Should they fail, they're turned into animals. Tough, but fair.
Rachel Weisz, John C. Reilly, Léa Seydoux, and Ben Whishaw play some of the other eligibles trying to navigate this rough world of dating and, apparently, black magick. Here's the trailer:
