Showing a newfound commitment to diversity and the same old commitment to trying not to spend too much whenever they can avoid it, Marvel has hired on Taika Waititi to direct Thor: Ragnarok. According to The Wrap, Waititi has beat out Gangster Squad director Ruben Fleischer for the chance to follow in the footsteps of Kenneth Branagh and Alan Taylor in directing a tale of a superhero hunk-god.

The half-Maori New Zealander Waititi already has experience with superhero films from appearing in Green Lantern, but behind the camera he's probably best known for the quirky romantic-comedy Eagle vs Shark and last year's well-regarded vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows. What does his hiring say about what will happen with Thor? Dude is definitely going to fight eagles, sharks, and vampires.
