Benedict Cumberbatch Already Playing Another Evil-Fighting Magician

December 9, 2015

Doctor Strange star Benedict Cumberbatch has got himself another role as his adventuring group's magic user. He has reportedly signed on to star in The War Magician, a World War II thriller being adapted by Book Of Eli writer Gary Whitta. Taking a name that suits him nearly as well as Benedict Cumberbatch, the actor would play Jasper Maskelyne, the real-life stage magician of the '30s and '40s who may or may not have been a war hero. Like The Imitation Game, the film will see Cumberbatch using his specialized, sort of dorky skills to help the British defeat the Germans. Maskelyne, it's said, employed his illusionist background to camouflage Allied armies and create the appearance of military units that weren't really there. The thing is, though, that might all be made up. Some have apparently disputed whether Maskelyne even did much more than entertain the troops with his tricks. Like Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and everything your friend said about his prom night, this is a "true" story to be taken purely as entertainment.
