Toshiro Mifune Turned Down Multiple 'Star Wars' Roles

December 4, 2015

Describing a sentiment completely foreign to modern society, actor Toshiro Mifune's daughter has said that her father had too much self respect for Star Wars.

"I heard from my father that he was offered the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi, but he was concerned about how the film would look and that it would cheapen the image of samurai," the Seven Samurai star's daughter, Mika, reportedly said at a Tokyo Comic Con event on Friday. "At the time, sci-fi movies still looked quite cheap, as the effects were not advanced, and he had a lot of samurai pride."

That's right: Toshiro Mifune could have played an older Ewan McGregor. And what's more, he apparently also could have played Darth Vader.

Mike continued, "So then, there was talk about him taking the Darth Vader role, as his face would be covered, but in the end he turned that down too." So ended legendary screen icon Toshiro Mifune's hopes of becoming the next David Prowse.
