Weekend Box Office: 'The Force Awakens' Taken Down by Likewise Familiar-Feeling Sequel

January 18, 2016

Ride Along 2 has done it: taken the top spot at the box office from that popular space movie. Over the weekend, the eagerly-awaited sequel to Straight Outta Compton took in $34 million, falling short of expectations but nonetheless capturing #1 from four-time champ The Force Awakens.

On the back of some Golden Globes wins and Leonardo DiCaprio's increasingly sweat-filled Oscar dreams, The Revenant actually managed to hold on to the second spot over The Force Awakens, too, pushing the Star Wars sequel to third. Michael Bay's political-explosion-drama 13 Hours debuted at fourth, while Norm of the North--the Rob Schneider-voiced animated film that looks like a clumsy, watered-down cocktail of Madagascar, Happy Feet, Ice Age, meant to premiere in a 2007 grocery store's DVD bin--opened still better than it had any right to in sixth.

Here's your weekend box office:

1. Ride Along 2 - $34 million

2. The Revenant - $29.5 million

3. Star Wars: The Force Awakens - $25.1 million

4. 13 Hours - $16 million

5. Daddy's Home - $9.3 million
