Cats is heading to the big screen, where at least the performers can't come out into the audience anymore. The Sun reports that director Tom Hooper, following the plan of a middle school drama class on a trip to New York, will go from Les Misérables to a production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's feline musical classic.
Model-turned-actress Suki Waterhouse is supposedly being eyed for a part, which raises the question: what does that mean exactly? Is she going to be done up in the makeup, leotard, and a fright wig? Will she be the voice of a CGI cat? A motion-captured anthropomorphic monster? What are we talking about here?
As it turns out, this is the same conversation Hooper and his cronies are already having. If the Daily Mail is to be believed, the studio is still sorting out how to make this work, an executive explaining, "Do you somehow use actors, sophisticated puppets, CGI -- or what? That's the point of the exercise. We hope to be able to answer all of those questions, following a long period of research." This is going to be huge for advancing Jellicle Cat science.
