Memorial Day Weekend Box Office Dominated by Face Paint, CGI

May 31, 2016

Over the long, Memorial Day weekend, we thanked our troops for their sacrifices in giving us our freedom, which we then used to watch yet another superhero movie. X-Men: Apocalypse took the top spot at the box office, performing to expectations but still well below Days of Future Past's three-day opening even in its four-day holiday total.

Likewise looking like a very poor franchise successor, Alice Through the Looking Glass took second but not with anything to brag about. Over four days, the $170 million film made just $34 million. By comparison, the 2010 Alice in Wonderland opened with over $116 million on a standard, three-day weekend. Though, to be fair, that weekend didn't feature quite such an aggressively in-your-face mobile campaign from the Mad Hatter...

Anyway, here's your weekend box office:

1. X-Men: Apocalypse - $80 million

2. Alice Through the Looking Glass - $34 million

3. The Angry Birds Movie - $24.6 million

4. Captain America: Civil War - $19.7 million

5. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising - $11.4 million
