Sacha Baron Cohen To Star in That Mandrake the Magician Movie You Were Begging For

June 8, 2016

It was over four years ago that Warner Bros. first announced plans to make a film about Mandrake the Magician, a comics superhero from the same creator and era as The Phantom but yet without the failed Billy Zane movie to show for it. There hadn't been any news from the project since, but now, with Marvel's Doctor Strange suddenly making magician superheroes with manserv--errrr... sidekicks?--seem viable, the studio is giving it another shot.

According to the Tracking Board, Mandrake the Magician is back in development and now has talent attached. The latest draft of the script is credited to the strange combination of 12 Monkeys writers David and Janet Peoples and and Puss in Boots writer Tom Wheeler. Screenwriter Etan Coohen, who just made his feature directorial debut on Get Hard, will direct, and it's said that Sacha Baron Cohen will star in the title role.

Sources claim that the character, typically depicted in an old-fashioney magician's top hat and cape, will now be updated for the 21st century. So, Mandrake: MINDFREAK?
