Over the four-day Independence Day weekend, Pixar honored the spirit of the USA by making an unanticipated spin-off even more successful than its original. Finding Dory took the top spot at the box office for another consecutive week, and in just its third weekend climbed to within easy reach of already overtaking Finding Nemo's entire box office total. The film is set to likewise overtake Toy Story 3 to become Pixar's highest-grossing movie to date.
Meanwhile, exceeding some fairly modest expectations for a $180 million film, Legend of Tarzan took second with $38 million, followed by The Purge: Election Year. In fourth was The BFG, lost in a day when Americans were more interested in their Big Fucking Guns.
Here's your weekend box office:
1. Finding Dory - $50.2 million
2. The Legend of Tarzan - $45.6 million
3. The Purge: Election Year - $34.8 million
4. The BFG - $22.3 million
